Ludlow Taylor Elementary School was formed in 1971 through the merger of two neighboring Capitol Hill schools: William Ludlow Elementary, named for a Civil War general (built in 1904 at G and 6th NE) and Zachary Taylor Elementary, honoring the 12th U.S. President (built in 1891 just off 7th Street NE). Though barely a block apart, both original buildings were razed to make way for the new integrated campus—now standing where one became a baseball field and the other a staff parking lot.
