Hey Ludlow Families!!!

I apologize for how long it has taken me to get this blog up! Technology has not been my friend lately!

As I said during Back to School Night, my hope is to update this blog bi-weekly or as we start exploring new topics.

I’ll start with Pre-K...
During the month of September we experimented with colors. We put red, yellow, and blue food coloring in water  and made guesses on what we thought might happen when we mixed two colors together. Students used pipettes (!) to mix the colors! We found that when we mixed blue and yellow, they made green. When we mixed yellow and red, it made orange, and when we mixed blue and red, we got purple. They did such a great job using their pipettes to work on those fine motor skills!

Next...Kindergarten and 1st Grade
During September your little scientist learned about plants. We talked about the parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, and flower) and what each part does. We also learned that plants need soil, water, food, air and room to grow! As an experiment we planted lima beans in baggies. Their lima beans are hanging in the windows of the courtyard in the lobby. Please check them out! We've got some that have already sprouted (yay!)

Last but not least...2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades!
In September we started off with a design challenge. We kicked off the year with the Marshmallow Challenge. Students worked in groups of 4 and were given 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, a marshmallow, and 18 minutes to build the tallest free-standing tower that could hold the weight of a marshmallow at the top.

Students learned a lot about teamwork and communication, and what they could change about their designs the next time we do the challenge. There were only 5 groups in the entire school that were able to build a structure that stood!!!

I will be doing design challenges with these grades once a month, so be on the look out for pictures!

I'll be updating this post with pictures soon, so come back and check them out!

    Miss Currier

I graduated from the University of Maine (Go Blue!!) in 2009 with a degree in Elementary Education. After graduating I taught 3rd Grade for 3 years in Maine. I moved to DC in 2013 and taught at Garrison Elementary School for 2 years before having my son, Otto. I love living and teaching in DC, there are so many opportunities for students and teachers to learn something new every day. I'm so excited to bring Science to Ludlow-Taylor!
