Back-to-School Night and other updates

9/19/2021

Hello Ludlow Families!  It is hard to believe we are almost to the month of October.  Thanks for your patience as we have navigated the first few weeks of school still operating with all the challenges a pandemic brings us.  Here are a few updates:

Back to School Night:
Please join us tomorrow, 9/20 as we host our Back to School Night virtually.  A link should be coming from your child’s teacher.  Our administration will begin at 5:30 with a few special guests and then we will send you off to learn from our educators.  Please see Zoom link here:
 https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82308184116?pwd=cHdQamhXZGtBaWNxcnZHcit1d3Qrdz09

COVID Cases:
Last weekend we began to encounter our first few COVID cases after two weeks of school.  If your child is identified as a close contact, you will receive communication and guidance from administration.  Our three asymptomatic testing sessions (each Thursday afternoon) have provided all negative results for students.  The COVID cases we have been dealing with, have come from families or staff notifying us, not from our testing in house.

Outdoor Lunch and Parent Volunteers:
Our teachers have been directed to relay any items needed for outdoor lunch to our PTO President, Lauren McDermott.  Lauren will work on creating a master list of items needed and share with families.  If a grade level is in need of parent volunteers, they will communicate this directly with Lauren and a Google spreadsheet will be created for coverage.  Some grade levels are not in need of volunteers as teachers must always be part of the supervision plan.  Outdoor lunch is not required, but many teachers have expressed interest, so we wanted to move ahead with ideas for planning purposes.

PTO Announcements:
Please see attached memo from our PTO.  Their first meeting will be held next week, at 7 p.m. virtually.  A Zoom link is forthcoming.

October Reminders/Looking Ahead:
This is a friendly reminder, students do not report to school on October 7-8.  October 7th is Parent/Teacher Conference Day, and these will be held virtually.  October 8th is a staff DCPS Professional Development Day.  Additionally, the following Monday 10/11 is a holiday.  Please note, I will be out of the office October 6-11 for my wedding out of state.  Ms. Ejechi will be your point of contact during that time.

We look forward to a wonderful week of learning together and we hope to see you tomorrow night, virtually at 5:30!

-Dr. Rachel Williams, Principal

Contact Tracing and COVID Protocols (9.13.21)

9/13/2021

Dear Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School,
This letter is to inform you that two individuals last present at Ludlow-Taylor on September 9 and September 10 have since reported a positive test for coronavirus (COVID-19). The individuals are no longer on campus and will not return until medically cleared.
As determined by the DCPS Contact Tracing team, DC Health, and in accordance with the district’s COVID-19 health and safety guidance, unless you have received instructions directly, your student has not been identified as a close contact of the positive individual and does not need to be tested or self-quarantine.
Persons for whom we know were in close contact with the positive individual were notified and provided guidance on next steps, including how any students impacted would receive instruction during quarantine.
For your awareness, DC Health defines a close contact in a PK-12 setting as, “Someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period, starting from two days before illness onset (or for asymptomatic infected people, two days prior to positive test collection) until the time the infected person is isolated.”
Since DCPS has layered mitigation measures in place at our schools, students who were in a classroom and  within 3 to 6 feet of another student who reported a positive test such that all were engaged in consistent and correct use of well-fitting face masks are not considered a close contact. This means that some classmates may not receive instructions to quarantine due to these measures. Additionally, upon notification of the positive case, and out of an abundance of caution, the building will be cleaned and disinfected, including classrooms, office areas, conference rooms, and other common areas.
We all play a role in protecting ourselves, our family, and our school community from COVID-19. That is why we encourage you to take the Stronger & Safer Together Pledge that includes everyday steps to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe.
  • Regardless of your vaccination status, if you are waiting for a COVID-19 test result that was taken after symptoms, please stay at home until you receive a negative test result.
  • If you receive a positive test result OR are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath — please stay at home and isolate from others in your household, notify your school immediately, and contact your healthcare provider.
  • We highly encourage our students and families to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Visit vaccinate.dc.gov to get started and find a free school clinic near you.
I know that this has been a trying time for our community. We will continue to keep you informed about our health and safety measures and work together to ensure we have a strong, robust, and safe school year.
Thank you,
Dr. Rachel Williams

Weekly Update 9.9.21

9/9/2021

Good Evening Families:

We are well into our second week of school and things are going very well.  Our students have been diligent in their mask wearing as well as bringing in their ASK, ASK, LOOK forms daily.  Thanks parents, for all of your reinforcement at home with both of these items.

Here are a few announcements for the week:
Open House/Curriculum Night:
This will be held virtually on September 20th starting at 6:00 with each homeroom teacher.  We will have a brief meeting starting at 5:30 to kick off the evening with administration and other special guests.  We look forward to seeing you.  Links are forthcoming.

PTO Updates:
Our PTO meeting for new families will be held Wednesday, 9/15.  This will take place on the LT Field at 6 p.m.  A calendar of events will be sent home in backpacks early next week.

Dismissal Updates:
On Monday, we will be staggering our dismissal of grade 1-5 students outside to the front starting at 3:15.  Each grade level will have a sign and assigned section to stand in outdoors.  Please do not crowd the front doors so that we can allow our classes enough space to exit safely.  Also, please make sure all students are picked up by 3:30 daily.

Outdoor Play Spaces:
For safety, please do not plan to stay at Ludlow to play on our grounds after dismissal.  We have close to 150 students in our after school program and they utilize our outdoor spaces.  Please pass this message on to nannies and neighbors.  After school ends at 6 p.m.

COVID Updates:
We were able to test about 35 students today in asymptomatic testing and await results this evening.  No positive cases have been reported at Ludlow to date.

BLOOMZ:
Teachers will begin using the Bloomz app. soon.  We just purchased schoolwide access and this will make for another form of quick communication with families.

Chain of Command:
Just wanted to send a friendly reminder that classroom teachers are your first point of contact with questions or concerns.  Administration would be your second layer of support.  Our teachers are experts and can help you resolve most issues.

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow as we close out the week!  As always, we appreciate your support of Ludlow!  Enjoy your weekend.

-Dr. Williams, Principal
