This is actually one of my favorite units to teach. Grades 3rd-5th, first discuss their own thoughts on what gymnastics is and where they may have seen this activity. Mostly, all the boys in each class, believe it's a "girls" sport, so we start the lesson on doing partner stunts, which they all seem to love. Partner stunts are different stations working on balancing, flips and jumping and landing, with another group member. Seeing the boys just as interested in the stations as the girls, is the best part of teaching this unit. After completing our unit on basketball, we ended the last lesson with 6 stations based on the skills we learned over the past few weeks. Passing Dribbling Spot Shooting Students practiced wrapping the ball around various body parts, to help work on ball handling. Passing was one of our favorite lessons. Here students are practicing accuracy by counting how many passes they can make to a target. To help students improve on their dribbling, I had students practice dribbling the ball once in each hoop. This helps them to slow down and focus on the actual cues of dribbling and hand-eye coordination. |
