LTES Community:

As we wrap up the 2017-2018, I want to thank everyone for an exceptional schoolyear.  From our incredible young people, to a determined staff and supportive families, Ludlow-Taylor ES is truly a special place, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of this community as we head into 2018-2019.  Below are announcements pertaining to the summer and start if next year. On the following page is further information about our school design for next year.

Summer Playground Hours:  DCPS summer school will be taking place at LTES, so the playground will be closed during those hours, otherwise hours are as follows:
  • Monday – Friday: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday-Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Class and Supply Lists: Classroom rosters, along with linked supplies lists, will be released the week of July 16th.  Rosters will be posted on the school doors, emailed via the listserv, and published on ludlowtaylor.org.  During the week of August 20th, supply drop-off times will be made available and ask that materials are brought to school by September 4th.  When creating class rosters, we first consider a balance of gender, race and special education services, to have the highest level of diversity as possible that we know supports current and future student success, so teacher and/or student cohort requests are not accepted.

2018 – 2019 School Arrival/Exercise Block: Next year, our doors will open at 8:05 a.m., with the morning looking slightly different for students to incorporate movement and a more health positive cafeteria environment.

2018-2019 Calendar of Events: In hopes of a better spread out calendar, we are looking to better spread out our events throughout the schoolyear (dates are subject to change):
  • Aug. 18 – Beautification Day, 18-19 School Kick-Off
  • Sept 12 (ECE – 5) – BTSN
  • September 28 – Initial PTO Meeting, International Night and Movie on the Lawn
  • October 19 - Fall Fundraiser
  •  November 16 – LT Thanksgiving
  • December 19, 20 – Winter Concerts
  • February 8 – Dad’s  Valentine’s Dance
  • March 6 – Pancakes and Literacy
  • April 27 – LT Taste of the Arts Auction
  • May 10 - Mother’s Day Dance
  • May 30, 31 - Spring Concerts
  • June 4 – PK3 Promotion Day

LTES Health and Wellness Design:

The Mission: At Ludlow-Taylor ES, we feel that it is our mission to maximize student outcomes academically, socially, and physically.  By examining incredible research from Dr. John Ratey in Spark, we are confident that with strategic planning around a health-positive school structure, students’ chances of having the most successful, healthy and joyful lives beyond LTES will dramatically improve.

The Research: According to the Center for Disease Control, “in the United States, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s, with data from 2015-2016 showing that nearly 1 in 5 school age children and young people (6 to 19 years) in the United States has obesity.”  There is an additional 30% of children on the cusp of having obesity.  Additionally, according to Brain Rules by John Medina, “children who are fit, have a higher ability to access cognitive resources to a task and do so for a longer period of time.” We can infer from this that students do not access to sufficient physical activity and nutritional instruction during the school-day, negatively impacting student physical health, while also not allowing for maximum learning opportunities.

The Plan: Working with multiple partners across Washington, DC, we plan to include the following components in the first year of our school design.   By doing so, we are confident that we can fulfill our mission of LTES student, staff and community member finding the best version of themselves.
  • Staff Wellness: Increased opportunities for staff will be provided for exercise and/or mental health support throughout the schoolyear.
  • Spark Block/Boost: Students in Grades 3-5 will begin everyday with a fitness class based around cardiovascular health, set up as circuit training. Students in Grades PK3-2 will experience a Spark Boost, an additional block of guided play in the morning.
  • Physical Education as Fitness Curriculum: PE classes will be designed to “develop healthy habits, skills, sense of joy and knowledge of how the body works.”  Students will also receive Health/PE twice a week, in addition to the daily Spark Block/Boost.
  • Nutrition/Science Class: FoodPrints will be expanded towards a weekly class for all students
  • Health-Positive Environment: Current school infrastructure will be redesigned to enhance health-positive outcomes for students and adults, including: cafeteria redesign (round tables, acoustic panels, redecoration, etc.), dedicated indoor/covered physical education space (partitioned multi-purpose room and outdoor gym)
  • Classroom Brain Boosts: Classrooms will incorporate brain and body breaks, to enhance current curriculum and instructional practice.  Teachers will be trained to include one to five-minute classroom activities, allowing the body and brain to stay active.
I sincerely thank the entire community for a tremendous year, and look forward to starting it all over again in August 2018.

Sincerely,

Andrew Smith
