Taste for the Arts Auction - April 7th!

Dear Ludlow Taylor Community,

As 2017 winds down and the holidays approach, I want to take the opportunity to say thank you. The school year has been full of learning, energy and excitement for our students, as well as our staff. Academically our school is excelling. Our Blue Ribbon recognition in 2016 was followed by a big increase in our 2016-2017 PARRC scores, soaring to almost 20% higher than the year prior. This year’s Annual Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner was attended by more than 150 people and our first-ever LTES Movie Night was enjoyed by over 300. Our student community, as well as the larger Capitol Hill neighborhood, are abuzz about our beautiful new playground and basketball court.

Many of these successes are due in part to the active role of the exceptional Ludlow Taylor PTO. Through the PTO’s efforts we have been able to offer students and their teachers improved technology, field trips, books, and exciting classroom learning experiences. This year, with the help of PTO funds, we have implemented Writer’s Workshop; A research-based, creative writing program from Columbia University, in which every student will have at least 35 minutes of writing-specific instruction and practice daily. Teachers will receive intensive professional development around the curriculum and strategies for student engagement and achievement. We were also able to install a new irrigation system for our incredible FoodPrints outdoor garden – the largest school garden in DC.

Ludlow Taylor depends on two key fundraising efforts to support these types of programs and opportunities. As a parent or a member of the school community, I hope you will consider giving, participating, promoting, or otherwise contributing to the success of the following two projects:

Community of Giving Campaign
The Campaign Provides an opportunity for Community Members to provide financial support to Ludlow-Taylor. This year we have a goal of raising $20,000 by December 31st. We have raised over $13,000 towards this effort so far. To donate, please visit
www.ludlowtaylor.org/donate

Taste for the Arts Auction
The auction is a wonderful event for families, teachers, staff, and community members to spend a fun night out in support of our school. This year’s event will take place on April 7th, 2018 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill. Mark your calendar now and stay tuned for updates as the event gets closer.

Again, I extend my thanks for your continued support.

DCPS Reading Challenge

12/20/2017

Ludlow-Taylor will be participating in the citywide DCPS reading challenge, with a goal of 3 million minutes read across the city. The challenge begins January 8 but you can start logging your minutes now. Visit https://ludlowtaylores. beanstack.org. Every student's account has already been set up--simply log in with their student I.D. number. (This is the number they use to log in to computers at school. Students in grades 1-5 will most likely know their log-ins. Families with children in preK or K: your number will be sent home.)

Their password is their birthday, in MMDDYY format (for example, a child born May 7, 2014 will have a password of 050714). If you have questions about your child's I.D. number or need any other assistance with the program, please contact Ms. Rebecca Burton (librarian) at Rebecca.burton2@dc.gov.

LT Families,

I want to take this moment to say thank you to all of our families for a great first half to our school year.  Our students are growing socially and academically at an incredible pace.  We have continued to challenge our students with the new writing curriculum and a higher level of differentiation during the math block.  Our community events have been packed and joyful, while our school-based celebrations have brought out the best in our students.  We recognize that growth at LT begins in the household, so thank you all for trusting us with your special children. I want to wish every a happy and safe holiday season.  Please see the updates below as we close out 2017:

Book Wonderland!: Ms. Burton will once again be hosting a "Book Wonderland" this year.  As students enter school on 12/20 and 12/21, each child will be able to select a book of their own to take home!  Families interested in contributing to the event can leave new or like-new books in the box outside the parent resource room marked "winter reading," anytime through Dec 15.

Spirit Week!: – Please join us in celebrating the holiday season next week, parents are encouraged to partake, as well.
  • Monday: Home for the Holidays
Wear your favorite flannel to school
  • Tuesday: Deck the Halls
Wear a fun holiday sweater, scarf, or hat.
Note: First grade should wear "Holiday Cheer" outfits on Tuesday.
  • Wednesday: Snowed in Wednesday
    Wear your PJs to School.
  • Thursday: Holiday Cheer
Wear your best holiday outfit. Go all out—sequins, sparkle, and pizzazz!
Note: First grade should wear "Deck the Halls" outfits on Thursday

LT Joy to the World Concerts: The annual winter concert will be this coming Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please join us in applauding our students’ artistic talents and the hard work of our specials team. This year, with the “Joy to the World” theme, as we will be celebrating holidays across many cultures.  Concerts will start promptly at 6:00 and sweet treats and pizza will be available for purchase.

Cold Weather Recess: As long as the temperature is above freezing, we plan to have students outside for recess, so please make sure students are sent to school with coats, hats and gloves, as needed.  If any winter apparel is needed, please let Ms. Frazier or me know.

Missing Clothes: We completely understand the frustration of lost coats, hats, gloves, etc., and are trying to create a better system.  Unfortunately, the front office staff cannot spend time searching for missing clothing, so we are asking for your help.  In the back of the cafeteria we will continue to keep our lost and found tables.  If something is missing, and not on the table, please use the white board above the back tables to write student name and the piece of missing clothing.  Hopefully, this will help retrieve a few more.  Also, please make sure student names are on all coats!
