Principal Update - 11.29.17

LT Families,

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend and help with our LT Thanksgiving and with food drive – both were huge successes!  We are now in the midst of a few weeks of crucial instructional time prior to the holiday break, with more exciting events upon us.  Please see the updates below:

Look For Good Project: We have begun rolling out the first phase of our “Look For Good” project as seen with the gratitude wall when you first walk into school.  We will be working on another round of gratitude sticky notes starting this week to continue expanding our wall.  Next, we will be moving into phase two of the project that will include “you matter” cards that students and staff will be passing to each other when positive actions are seen across the school-day.

Research tied to this project suggest that if we first teach students the meaning of gratitude, we can dramatically improve positive student interactions, while also reduces bullying incidences. Further information can be found at https://www.lookforthegoodproject.org.

LTES PTO Fall Campaign: As a reminder, we have a few weeks left in our LTES PTO Fall Campaign - 100% of donations directly impacts students and staff across all grade levels. Your donations help bridge the gap by allowing investments in technology, inquiry-based learning materials, capital improvements, and adequate supplies for our teachers and specials leads. Checks can be dropped in the main office, dropped in the PTO box in the Parent Center/FoodPrints room, or made electronically at http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/donate.html. Thank you for the continued support!

After-School Clubs: We have received many inquiries about afterschool clubs, please visit  https://www.ludlowtaylor.org/clubs.html for the winter club offerings.

Parent Request: In the main office, there is a sign-in sheet for Back to School Night for this year.  I forgot to put a sign in sheet out at the beginning of the year, but need proof of attendance for our Title I funding.  If you did attend, please stop by to sign quick. Apologies for the confusion on this – we will be sure to have these out the night of BTSN next year.

Student Cell Phones: We have had recent distractions involving student cell phones during the day and during after-school.  While we completely understand that many students may have cell phones, but we are asking for parent support in reinforcing a strict no cell phone policy during the school-day and during after-school.  Students may use cell phones during dismissal from both the regular school day and from after-school.

Missing Clothes: We completely understand the frustration of lost coats, hats, gloves, etc., and are trying to create a better system.  Unfortunately, the front office staff cannot spend time searching for missing clothing, so we are asking for your help.  In the back of the cafeteria we will continue to keep our lost and found tables.  If something is missing, and not on the table, please use the white board above the back tables to write student name and the piece of missing clothing.  Hopefully, this will help retrieve a few more.  Also, please make sure student names are on all coats!

Upcoming Events: Please visit, http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/calendar.html to learn more about upcoming events and how to sync to our master calendar.

  • Friday, December 1st – Professional Development, no school for students

Best,

A. Smith

Thanksgiving Request

Good Evening,

I want to thank everyone for supporting our community Thanksgiving and the Grades 2-5 publishing party last week.  Both were really special events that once again reaffirmed the uniqueness and kindness of our community.

This week, we are putting together Thanksgiving baskets to make sure that every family has a full meal come Thursday, and we are just about there.  At this point, we could use about 15 more boxes of macaroni and cheese and 6 more grocery store gift cards ($25 - $50) for turkeys.  If possible, please drop off in the front lobby.  Thanks for the continued support of our incredible community!

LT Families,

LT Thanksgiving Potluck – This Friday, November 17th!: We are thrilled to host our 2nd Annual LTES Thanksgiving this Friday from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., please join!  Delicious turkey from Hill Country BBQ will be provided by the PTO, as will beverages plates, napkins and plastic-ware.  We are asking families to bring side dishes with the following grade level assignments (please include ingredients with any cooked dish!):
  • PS3: Side dish
  • PK4: Vegetable/Fruit
  • Kindergarten: Dessert
  • 1st Grade: Side dish
  • 2nd Grade: Side dish
  • 3rd Grade: Vegetable/Fruit
  • 4th Grade: Dessert
  • 5th Grade: Side dish
There is also a food drive to make sure every family enjoys Thanksgiving at home, too. Please visit  https://www.ludlowtaylor.org/thanksgiving-potluck--food-drive.html for suggested donation items.

Look For Good Project: We have begun rolling out the first phase of our “Look For Good” project as seen with the gratitude wall when you first walk into school.  This coming Friday, all classrooms across the school will be participating in an initial rollout – learning about the motivation of the project, the meaning of gratitude, and enjoying a school-wide read aloud, “Her Right Foot” by Dave Eggers.  We will also have a small portion of our LT Thanksgiving tied to the project, as well.

Research tied to this project suggest that if we first teach students the meaning of gratitude, we can dramatically improve positive student interactions, while also reduces bullying incidences.  Please stay tuned for the next phases and begin talking with students about the meaning of gratitude.  Also, as a fundraiser to support the project, our social-emotional learning committee put together a stylish long sleeve t-shirt that can be ordered for $20 through the following link: https://www.customink.com/fundraising/ltes-look4good

After-School Clubs: We have received many inquiries about afterschool clubs, please visit  https://www.ludlowtaylor.org/clubs.html for the winter club offerings.

LTES PTO Fall Campaign: Over the next few days, in backpacks, all families will be receiving information regarding our PTO Fall Fundraising Campaign.  As a reminder, 100% of donations directly impacts students and staff across all grade levels. As we know, the DCPS budget alone is not enough to achieve the world-class education we seek for our students. Your donations help bridge the gap by allowing investments in technology, inquiry-based learning materials, capital improvements, and adequate supplies for our teachers and specials leads. Please visit http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/donate.html for further information.

Upcoming Events: Please visit, http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/calendar.html to learn more about upcoming events and how to sync to our master calendar.
  • November 16 – Grades 2-5 Publishing Party (9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.)
  • November 17 – LT Community Thanksgiving
  • November 23-24 – Thanksgiving Break

Principal Update - 11.1.17

LT Families,

I want to thank everyone that supported recent school events including: Fall Festival, Movie Night and the Halloween Parade.  We had an incredible turnout for all and look forward to building on them for next year.  I truly appreciate when we are all able to come together as a school community with joy and unity as the central goals.  Also, a very special thank you to everyone that helped to organize!  We are next looking forward to November 17th for our 2nd Annual LT Thanksgiving. Please see the updates below for further information:

Writer’s Workshop at LT: We are truly building a community of writers! Over the past few weeks, we had about 20 teachers take part in a full-day professional development seminar with a trainer from Columbia University, with instructional coaching that followed.  With the help of the PTO, we were even able to send a few teachers to Philadelphia for additional professional development around writing.  Please remind your students that they can write about anything and ask them what they may have written about at school – the answers may surprise you!

Family Feedback: I want to thank everyone for taking the time to fill out the feedback link that was sent out a couple weeks ago.  It hopes of turn-keying some of the feedback, as a school team, we hope to continue building on the following:
  • Specialized student experiences (field trips, in-school experts, learning in the community, school clubs, after-school clubs, etc.)
  • Science program
  • Community-based events that cross grade levels
We are currently working to improve the following:
  • Normed parent communication across classrooms
  • More clear understanding of homework expectations
  • Focus on positive student behavior (see below on an immediate next step)

Look For Good Project: As part of a renewed focus on positive student interactions and behaviors, we will be rolling out, our own “Look For Good” Project, to have students, staff and families focus on acts of kindness throughout the school building.  Research tied to this project suggest that it dramatically improves positive student interactions, while also reduces bullying incidences.  As a whole, I feel we have an incredibly positive and supportive school culture, but that does not mean we cannot do better as we continue to learn more about social-emotional development and its impact on young people.

Please stay tuned for the roll-out over the next month and feel free to check the website tied to the campaign, www.lookforthegoodproject.org.
