Week 5!

LT Families,

I want to thank everyone for making it to Back to School Night this year.  We had incredible attendance and appreciate the continued support from our community as we have begun the 2017-2018 school year.  Now, as we conclude our fifth week of school, students are just about settled into academic transitions and content, with rigor increasing from week to week.   Please see the announcements below:

Courtyard Pick-Up:
In hopes of relieving some of the confusion in the front of the building at dismissal, those students that do not attend after-school, will wait in the courtyard, instead of the nook, on nice weather days.  ECE – Grade 2 will still be in the classrooms until about 3:25 then moved to the courtyard.

Weekend/Evening Playground Hours:
During the week, the playground will continue to be open to LT families immediately after-school, then reserved for our after-school program from 4:15 – 5:45.  At 5:45 the gates will then open again for neighborhood usage until 8:00 p.m.  On the weekends, the playground will be open from dawn until dusk.  A few LT families in the neighborhood have kindly offered to unlock the gate prior by 9:00 a.m., and close the playground by dark.  This will hopefully support us in ensuring a safe, clean playground for our students during the week.  We are asking that all LT families support us in keeping the grounds safe particularly in keeping dogs off the property and people from hanging on the basketball rims.

PE Grant:
Last year, thanks to our PTO grant writing committee, we were able to secure a $2500 grant from Tanger Outlets to be put towards PE equipment.  Coach Smith and I are looking into use the grant to purchase soccer nets for the baseball outfield.  Our outdoor space keeps getting better!

Recent News:
This week our 4th grade students attended a powerful field trip to Josiah Henson Park in Montgomery County (https://www.montgomeryparks.org/parks-and-trails/josiah-henson-park/).  John Henson Park is considered an integral part of the Underground Railroad, while also “a historic resource of local, state, national and international significance because of its association with Reverend Henson, whose 1849 autobiography, The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Our 5th graders will be attending the trip in the coming weeks.

Upcoming Events:
  • Sept. 18 – Pre-BOY RTI interventions begin
  • Sept. 22 – Professional Development Day – No School for Students
  • Sept. 28 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. – PTO Meeting – please attend!
    • Babysitting will be provided for free
  • Oct. 9 – Columbus Day – No School
  • Oct. 12 – K-5 Writer’s Workshop PD
  • Oct. 13 – Hispanic Heritage Celebration
  • Oct. 20 – LT Movie Night
  • Oct. 31 - Costume Parade

Thank you all for the great start to the 2017-2018 school year.  Please reach out with any questions, concerns and shout-outs.

Best,

A. Smith
