Principal Update - 4/18/18

LT Families:

We are excited that warmer weather is finally here!  Please see the updates below, and attached document regarding the new food allergy policy (also sent home Wednesday 4.18.18).

LTES Food Allergy Policy: As mentioned last week, we are making substantial shifts with our food allergy policy. As a school team we recognize that this is a dramatic shift mid-year, but are only doing so because of the seriousness of the issue, particularly that which can be life-threatening for many of our students.  As I have worked with a parent group and teacher group over the past few weeks, and further educated myself, I only regret not making this change sooner.

Officially, our policy is now: “Food related allergies, especially allergies related to nuts, can be life threatening for children with those allergies. As such, Ludlow-Taylor ES is a nut free school. Please do not send nuts, nut spreads, foods containing nuts to school with your child.“  Please see the additional document for further information and documentation that we are requesting on the new policy.  Also, please feel free to reach out and/or attend the PTO meeting this week (details below) with any questions or concerns.

2018-2019 Re-Enrollment: Please stop by the main office to re-enroll as soon as possible for 2018-2019 – it is now open! We are expecting after-school enrollment to open in early May, and as a reminder, students cannot register for after-school unless they have already registered for school.

April 19th PTO Meeting – Please mark your calendars for a packed PTO meeting on April 19th.  At the meeting we will be discussing:
  • Food Allergy Policy Feedback
  • Health and wellness school model details
  • Upcoming PTO and LSAT elections
  • Auction results
Taste for the Arts Auction: Special thank you to the auction committee, Mr. JP and all those that were able to attend and support!  Over $50,000 was raised that will directly support all students at LTES!

PARCC Testing: From May 1st – 4th and May 8th – 11th, students in grades 3-5 will be taking the PARCC test for 60 – 90 minutes a day. We have done our best to ensure minimal disruptions for students in ECE – Grade 2, with little changing throughout the building outside of the testing time.  Please make sure students are well-rested, calm and on time!

Upcoming Events: Please visit, http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/calendar.html to learn more about upcoming events and how to sync to our master calendar.
  • April 19th , 6:00 p.m. – PTO Meeting
  • April 27th – Professional Development Day – no school for students

LT Families:

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break – now all we need is the weather to warm up in DC. As a reminder, this Friday, there is a half-day and students will be dismissed at 12:15 p.m.  Please see the updates below:

Taste for the Arts Auction: The auction is a wonderful event for families, teachers, staff, and community members to spend a fun night out in support of our school This year’s event will be held this Saturday, April 7th at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill.  If you have not already done so, please visit: https://www.ludlowtaylor.org/taste-for-the-arts-auction.html, to buy tickets for the event.  Free tickets are also available to any family, please just let your homeroom teacher know.  Our online auction has already begun at www.biddingowl.com/ludlowtaylor with some very exciting items including box tickets to see the Nationals and U2, incredibly artwork from Mr. JP and local artists, along with the ever-exciting Principal for the Day item.

As a staff, we recognize and try to limit financial asks and will always value time and support of families over any financial contribution.  We do promise to make the most of donations, with no overhead and direct support to our classrooms.  Just this year, we have been able to purchase clay for our art room, add 32 chromebooks, extend FoodPrints, add high level professional development through Columbia University and more.  With your support, we look forward to continuing to provide a world-class education for all students at Ludlow-Taylor.

2018-2019 Re-Enrollment: Please stop by the main office to re-enroll as soon as possible for 2018-2019 – it is now open! We have not yet been given a date for after-school enrollment, which is usually in early May, but as a reminder, students first need to be registered for school before they can register for after-school.

Friday Half-Day/After-School Announcement: There is a half-day this Friday, with students dismissed at 12:15 p.m. and teachers partaking in records day.  We unfortunately do not have the ability to offer after-school coverage on half-days.

Look For Good Project: We have continued teaching our students our new five core values, LT P.R.I.D.E.: Politeness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Empathy.  During April, we are focused on integrity, with student passing around “you matter” notes and necklaces to each other when good deeds are spotted.

April 19th PTO Meeting – Please mark your calendars for a packed PTO meeting on April 19th.  At the meeting we will be discussing:
Health and Wellness School model and community committee (as mentioned, The model is a work in progress, with our first district meeting scheduled for next week.  Please feel free to provide feedback here: https://goo.gl/forms/cqcWVUmHVhbNbSor2, to help us as we continue to plan.
