Apologies for getting this out a day late! Thank you all for helping us to support Black History Month with spirit week; we still have a few upcoming events next week that we are looking forward to. As a reminder, there is no school for students Friday the 16th and Monday the 19th. Please see the school-wide updates below:
Pancakes and Literacy: Please mark your calendars for Thursday, March 8th for our famous Pancakes and Literacy event. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and will be free of charge for all families.
Look For Good Project:
We began introducing our students to our newly defined five core value last week. Please check in your with your kiddo about LT P.R.I.D.E.: Politeness, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Empathy. During February we are focused on politeness, with student students adding to our gratitude walls on each floor and the following student look-fors:
- We speak with a gentle tone of voice.
- We use kind words even when we are upset.
- We use good manners.
East City Bookshop Author Visit: Russell Ginns, author of the upcoming "Samantha Spinner" [http://www.samanthaspinner.com] series, will be visiting grades 3-5 on Feb. 23. He'll do a short presentation, answer questions, and sign his book. Families may pre-order the book by sending in $16 in cash (exact change only) or a check made out to East City Bookshop. With your order, please include a note indicating your child's full name and homeroom teacher. Orders can be given to your child's teacher or to Ms. Rebecca Burton, and are due by Tuesday morning, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.
Health and Wellness School Model: Thinking into next year, the school leadership team and I have begun working with DCPS to possibly refine our school model for next year. Recent research brain research, out of Harvard University, and the book Spark by Dr. John Ratey and Eric Hagerman, makes a clear case that students simply are not active enough, and that by increasing student activity, achievement will rise along as negative behaviors decrease. Using this research, we are considering piloting a health and wellness model for next year that would include the following components:
Zero Physical Fitness Block:
- Students begin everyday with fitness class based around cardiovascular health, set up as circuit training. For us, this would most likely take place from 8:25 – 9:00 a.m., with a quick/healthy breakfast that follows
- The goal of our physical education classes would be to “develop healthy habits, skills, a sense of fun, along with knowledge of how the body works.” Team sports would still be incorporated, but the focus would be around physical fitness. Students would also receive PE twice a week (not including the zero block)
- Our science class would shift towards health, particularly around the impact of exercise on the physical and mental body, along with healthy eating. We are currently discussing an expanded FoodPrints program to help lead this work.
- The major difference in the classroom would be the incorporation of brain breaks, as our curriculum and instructional practices would not be changing. One to five minute activities would be introduced during academic blocks to allow the body and brain to stay active, such as: mindful minutes, quick yoga, group dance, stretching, etc.
