Per the Mayor’s announcement (Mayoral Update - April 17), schools will be ending distance learning on Friday, May 29th with the hope of re-opening in early August. Mayor Bowser and Chancellor Ferebee said that there would be further clarification on May 15th.
Distance Learning – Next Steps:
We are working towards creating simpler daily schedules for students online that include teacher-led video and student-guided work via grade level websites and Microsoft Teams. Specials teachers will additionally have uploaded video lessons per“specials day.” Please bookmark and visit https://www.ludlowtaylor.org/distance-learning.html as the homepage for all distance learning materials.
After-School/Extended Day Program:
Please view our Afterschool Webinar that will explain modifications for the program moving into next school-year. As the webinar explains, we have tried to do our best in these uncertain times to create an affordable program that is safe, joyful and accessible to all.
After watching the webinar, if questions persist, please complete this Extended Day Follow-Up Form. Principal Smith will compile all the questions and prepare a FAQ document and video response on Wednesday, April 29th. For questions specific to your family, please reach out to email@example.com.
Weeks 6 and 7 packets will be for pick-up from school on Tuesday and Wednesday nextweekfrom9:30a.m.–2:00p.m.oronline at https://dcps.instructure.com/courses/179580/pages/learners. If downloading from the website, choose the grade level, then there will be a link in the top right corner for Weeks 6-7 learning plans that prompt the download.
According to DCPS, enrollment will begin on Monday in a strictly online fashion, “While we are unable to conduct enrollment in person until school buildings reopen, the DCPS Enrollment Team has developed an electronic submission process using a platform called SeamlessDocs that will allow families to enroll remotely. Through SeamlessDocs, families can read, complete, sign, and submit the entire DCPS SY20-21 Enrollment Packet, including the DCPS Enrollment Form, DC Residency Verification form, DCPS Consents, and DCPS Notifications, as well as allow families to upload proof of DC residency. The enrollment submission process will also allow school staff to electronically review signed forms and supporting documentation submitted to their school.”
As soon as we have further information on specific steps to enroll, we will pass it along.
We recognize that there is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to grading, however, we want to ensure families that unless there was a conversation prior to school closing, all students will be promoted. Beyond on public health, our priority is to keep students academically and emotionally engaged during this period, and to be prepared as possible to support students when we return to school. For further information regarding grading, please visit: Term 3 Grading Guidance during COVID-19 Closure (with ECE only receiving grades 3 times a year, there will be no marks for Term 3). For Term 4, DCPS will be moving to a “Pass or No Mark” option for students based on engagement with distance learning (Grading, Promotion and Graduation Guidance 4.23.20 ).
From the Literary Hill Board President, Elizabeth Cogan, “We usually hold a physical book festival at Eastern Market each spring, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, we've had to cancel that and move online instead. We'll feature some of Capitol Hill's most beloved authors and poets for a lively two hours of readings, panel discussions, children's activities, and more - sure to delight teachers, students, and parents alike.” The event will take place on Sunday, May 3rd from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at www.literaryhillbookfest.org

Family Update 3/30/2020
I hope you everyone is taking care as we shift towards our new normal of social distancing and remote learning. It has certainly been a challenging few weeks, but I cannot thank everyone enough for the grace and flexibility as we continue to support each other. Also, please join me in thanking our teachers and staff for all of the creative ways they have shifted to remote learning and connecting with students this past week. Like all of you, our teachers are balancing duties at home, teaching their own kids, while also learning a completely new method of instruction.
Please continue to have a generous spirit with us as we continue to figure out what works best for each grade level and family. As a reminder (as of now), DC Public Schools will remain closed and distance learning will take place through Friday, April 24 with classes resuming on Monday, April 27.
To any of you directly impacted by COVID-19, please don’t hesitate to reach out if there are ways our school community can support you.
Distance Learning Guidance FAQs:
Are there more distance learning packets and will they continue?
Yes, the next set of packets arrived and we are organizing and making more copies now; it is our understanding this will continue with future packets as well. They will be available right inside the front door on 7th street (with hand sanitizer) at the following times:
- Tuesday, 3/31 – 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- Thursday, 4/2, 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
For families that might be out of town or prefer not to come into school, all materials can be found at bit.ly/DCPS_ICP. Once on the site, follow these steps:
1. Click on the "Learners" tab and then
2. Select the grade level
3. At the top right, you will then see, "Download All Learning Plans for Weeks 1 - 3" with a blue link underneath it to begin the download.

How many hours should my students be remote learning per day?
Several parents have reached out seeking clarification on how much dedicated time it is reasonable to expect families to accomplish, especially those of you with multiple children, and those that are also trying to work from home. Please create a schedule that works best for your family. If students get a couple hours of academic learning (through a combination of online learning, completion of packets, a virtual lesson from teachers, or your direct 1:1 support at home) this is a positive step forward.
Why are there so many online platforms?
Unfortunately, we have not found one platform that covers everything we need (daily communication, live video, video uploads, assignments and teacher feedback) so we are using a combination of a few. We understand if this feels overwhelming now, but we are hoping that with consistency and practice, we will all become more technologically savvy.
What should we expect from teachers and grade levels moving forward?
Starting next week (some grade levels this week), teachers will share a “weekly schedule” per grade level, that is also followed up each day with video lessons and explanations. There will also be “weekly Zoom meet-ups,” and individual teacher office hours for students and families to connect with teachers around specific questions.
What about specials classes?
We are going to have “specials of the day” across the school, with a specials website (available soon!) that families can go to for enrichment activities in grade level bands (ECE, K-2 and 3-5):
- Everyday - Read Aloud with Ms. Burton
- Mon. – PE (two lessons per grade level band)
- Tues. – Art with Mr. JP
- Weds. – Spanish with Ms. Metheny and Science with Ms. Bryant
- Thurs – Music with Mr. Levy
- Fri - Return to favorite or unfinished activity from the week
DC Health Resources for Families:
- Many resources, including information about how to protect yourself and your family, are available on coronavirus.dc.gov.
