Important Info about LTES Virtual Learning

Ludlow-Taylor Parents and Families,

The first day of school is almost here and we are excited! We have plenty of information to share with you below to ensure our students are set for success.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
We are grateful for our PTO which offers a way for parents to come together and works closely with school leadership to support our school in a variety of ways.
Learn more about our PTO by visiting http://www.ludlowtaylor.org/about.html. E-mail PTO@ludlowtaylor.org to get involved or donate.

Additionally, this month, DCPS is kicking off a Parent University series focused on the #ReopenStrong questions at the top of your mind, including what learning at home looks like, online tools, and more.

These online events will be held weekly and recordings of each session will be posted on DCPS website,
https://dcpsreopenstrong.com/, so you can watch any time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We have collected all questions asked during our parent meetings and over the course of the previous weeks and compiled them into the Frequently Asked Questions document.

Check out the Chat & Chew PPT slides if you missed the offered webinars.

Technology
Does your student need a device for learning at home? Complete this short survey.

For those who received the confirmation tech email from me, you can pick up devices Wednesday, August 26th through Friday, August 28th, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

The DCPS Student Tech Recommendations document includes recommendations on which devices to use for students.

It provides guidance parents can use to assess whether a device they own or plan to purchase is suitable for DCPS virtual instruction. While DCPS has not tested every specific laptop/tablet available, aligning with the specifications outlined in the document is recommended.

Materials Distribution & Medication Pick-up
Wednesday, August 26th through Friday, August 28th, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM, Ludlow-Taylor Elementary will be open for families to pick up instructional materials; medication and student cubby items left from last year.

Schoolwide Wishlist
We are so grateful for the many of you who have reached out and asked how you can support and prepare teachers. After speaking with teachers, we have compiled a school-wide wish list that is NOT the same as the classroom/grade level wish list. We are only attaching this list if you would like to contribute to the school, overall.

Thank you all and have a great weekend. We will continue learning, growing, and planning together. We will also share updates as they come.

Next up.. you will hear from your classroom teacher!
YAY!!!!

With Love,
Principal Daniel

A message from Ludlow-Taylor ES

June 19, 2020

Dear LTES Community,
I hope that this letter finds each of you well during these unprecedented times. Serving as the principal of Ludlow-Taylor ES has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life, with memories and relationships I will always cherish. However, it is with a heavy heart, that I am sending this letter to inform you that I will not be returning as principal for school year 2020-2021 as I am joining the Randle Highlands Elementary School as their new instructional coach.

From the first time I walked into the school building, on the last day of the 2015-2016 school year, I was greeted with open arms and a collaborative spirit. As I reflect on my tenure at Ludlow Taylor and the work we have done together, there’s so much to be proud of, and I would like to highlight just a few of our community’s accomplishments:
  • We have seen our enrollment grow from about 300 students to over 460;
  • We have built an incredible playground and garden, renovated and expanded our multi-purpose room to increase student movement and promotion of healthy living;
  • We added a science program, expanded our health and physical education department, implemented Writers Workshop, and most recently a whole child approach to ensure purposeful social-emotional development for every student at LTES.
We did all of this while moving to the top tier of student achievement across Washington, DC.

I am going to miss our community events, particularly the evenings we would come together for LT Thanksgiving, Pancakes and Literacy, and International Night. I am also going to miss standing out in front of the school in the mornings and afternoons, greeting colleagues, families, and students as they walked in and out of the building – my days always started and ended with a smile when I had this time in my schedule. Mostly though, I am going to miss our incredible students. I think of a young student that every single morning would say, “Hey buddy, give me a hug” as he came into school. This group of young people has taught me more than I ever could have taught them.

Our current public health crisis and necessary school closure make this farewell even harder since we cannot say goodbye face to face. However, I look forward to supporting a smooth leadership transition for our community. As you all know, we have an incredible staff and leadership team, that will ensure Ludlow-Taylor stays on the same positive trajectory. We finished the year strong and together, even though we were apart. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for trusting me to be a part of your child’s educational journey. It has been my greatest joy as an educator.

With much appreciation,
Andrew Smith

LT Families – please see the quick announcements for this week!

Packet Pick-Up: Thursday/Friday
The final packet pick-up is scheduled for Thursday (5/14) and Friday (5/15) this week from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.. This is slightly different from DCPS pick-up days to better accommodate our staff.

School Enrollment:
SchoolEnrollment for 20-21 is now open and online at: https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/71, Please enroll as soon as possible as this year, more than any other, it will be important for us to demonstrate our increasing enrollment numbers to secure local funding.  If you need any support please reach out to  Ms. White (crystal.white@k12.dc.gov) and Ms. Thompson (brittney.cloyd@k12.dc.gov) with any questions.

After School FAQs and Notes:
When does after-school enrollment start? Friday, May 15th!
What is the website for after-school enrollment? This is not live yet, but will be emailed out on May15th.
Key Notes:
-        Every child is guaranteed a spot, regardless of when registration takes place. As of right now, the enrollment fee increases after July 31st.  We recognize the pressure from previous years and hope this makes for a more flexible and less-stressful process for families.
-        Every student is guaranteed a spot and there will be no waitlist
-        Kaizen Karate is our management partner that is supporting with enrollment, payment plans, and staff payroll, so their name will be present on the website.
